Description

Shirakumo is a woman-led independent game studio and open source collective from Switzerland, focused primarily on advancing game technologies with Common Lisp. The collective also maintains various projects in the areas of networking and web development.

Among the most important projects are the Trial game engine and the Radiance web application environment.

History

Shirakumo was initially founded in 2016 to allow easier collaboration between Yukari Hafner and other interested parties like Janne Pakarinen and Selwyn Simsek. The Trial game engine project was also started in that time, in an attempt to participate in game jams using Common Lisp as the development language.

The Radiance web application environment and associated technologies were also moved over from Yukari's personal projects to Shirakumo shortly after.

In 2020 the subdivision Shirakumo Games was created to separate the open source collective work from the commercial game development work. Shirakumo Games funded, developed, and published Eternia: Pet Whisperer and Kandria. In 2023 work began on a new title as well, with the tentative title Weiss.

To date almost all of Shirakumo's output is Yukari's work, and she remains the lead author and director of the collective and games devision both.
